TSI: Individualized (for Frequency Normalization)

TSI: Individualized is a new exciting service offered by NACD specifically to address auditory tonal processing in a customized way, specific to an individual’s particular needs. Based on a spectral analysis of the speaker’s voice, music of their choice is filtered so that frequencies that are weak or missing in the individual’s voice are emphasized in the music.

The techniques used in TSI: Individualized are based on the discoveries of pioneer Dr. Alfred Tomatis and the principle that has become known as The Tomatis Effect. In agreement with Dr. Tomatis and in expanding the idea of the “ear” to encompass the whole auditory system, we see the voice as a “snapshot” of an individual’s auditory tonal processing.

By looking at the frequency content of an individual’s voice through voice analysis, we determine what frequency ranges are weak or missing and view this as representative of how that individual is processing sound. We then apply filtering and other engineering techniques to boost these target frequencies (or dampen other stronger frequencies) in the music. The modified music becomes a high-intensity, individualized therapeutic program to improve their tonal processing.

Candidacy

TSI: Individualized (for Frequency Normalization) is appropriate for anyone concerned with auditory tonal processing. Problems in this area may manifest as:

Speech or language disorders
Difficulty with listening
Difficulty understanding
“Mis-hearing” words (for example, confusing the words “five” and “nine”)
Voice too loud/too soft (i.e., poor self-awareness and regulation of voice)
Voice inflection “off” (i.e., monotone or sing-song)
Can’t tune in to certain people’s voices

In addition, TSI: Individualized (for Frequency Normalization) could also be used to enrich the frequency content of the voice for professional singers or speakers.

Ages: This service is available for all ages, both children and adults. It is equally appropriate for both verbal and non-verbal children, as we are looking at voice, not articulation.
